The Gateway Story Story

Jason Stephen was born to be a builder. As a kid, a love for designing and building projects of all kinds led to the University of Wyoming and a master’s degree in Civil Engineering for the Laramie, Wyo., native. He later acquired a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Wyoming and Colorado. After graduation, Jason went to work for a government contractor, building roads and other infrastructure projects. However, he found the work unfulfilling because it took so long to see a project through.

In 2001, Jason teamed up with his father and a friend to establish a small general contracting company that specialized in residential and commercial construction. Some of their first jobs included a storage facility for the National Guard and a science room remodel. Eventually, Jason’s friend decided to leave the business so, with the help of his dad, he bought out the partner and went all in during 2003. Jason also changed the name of the company to Gateway Construction, LLC — a name that suggested the transition to a new chapter of life, perfect for a new business owner who also happened to build homes.

Ups & Downs Ups & Downs

In the early years of Gateway Construction, it was just father and son — Jim in the office, handling the financials, and Jason in the field. The first Gateway custom home was completed in Cheyenne’s Western Hills subdivision in 2004. Its new owners, the Gills, put an ad in the local newspaper, thanking the Gateway team for their hard work. It’s a meaningful memento that Jason still has on the wall in his office.

After the excitement and satisfaction that came with the construction of the first handful of new homes, Jason knew he had found his calling. He started building multiple homes and, around 2007, brought on four key employees to help manage the process: Superintendents Sean Conner and Hank Sohl, CAD Designer Sean Quinn and Project Manager Eric Adams. Sean and Hank’s trustworthiness and ability to independently manage work in the field, combined with Sean Q’s creative abilities and Eric’s extensive construction knowledge and organizational skills, allowed Jason to focus on development and continue to expand company operations.

Gateway’s growth wasn’t linear, however; in fact, there were many ups and downs. In 2008, the housing bubble burst and the company went into survival mode. Fortunately, Gateway had not been set up to work from project to project like numerous other builders. Because it was operated on less than it made, the company withstood the downturn as well as many future challenges, including the COVID pandemic.

Striving for Perfection Perfection

Just past the 20-year milestone, Jason continues to keep the focus on producing the best possible work for the client. He holds the Gateway team to high standards at each stage of the construction process with this reminder: “We’ll never be perfect but we can always get better!” Many of the steps that bring a Gateway home to fruition are not things that other builders do, and that’s what makes a Gateway home stand out.

The Gateway team takes care to produce high-quality construction that meets or exceeds the baseline code and industry standards at every stage of the building process. Gateway homes are built with proven products that provide decades of durable performance, and energy-efficient features such as a complete thermal enclosure system, a high-efficiency HVAC system, Low-E windows and smart thermostats for comfort and lower utility bills. Gateway homes are also designed with an eye for exterior aesthetics to create a pleasing, cohesive look within the respective community.

Jason personally walks homes to ensure no detail has been missed prior to turning over the keys to a new homeowner and enjoys a huge sense of fulfillment when clients are happy with their completed project. In addition to residential construction, the Gateway team has also become a formidable presence in the commercial construction industry, with the ability to tackle complex projects such as large multi-family developments, office buildings, retail buildings, storage units and tenant finishes.

Gateway continues to prove its tenacity. Now one of the area’s largest builders with a staff of more than 30 full-time employees, the company has constructed more than 500 projects throughout Cheyenne, Laramie and northern Colorado. Jason has demonstrated ongoing commitment to Cheyenne and the growth of Gateway with a very special project: a 16,000-square-foot company headquarters, located on Commerce Circle on the east side of Cheyenne.

Gateway is proud to be a respected member of the Southeast Wyoming Builders Association, the National Association of Home Builders, the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce and Cheyenne LEADS. The company also gives back through support of local sports teams, local high schools, the University of Wyoming, COMEA Shelter, the Unaccompanied Student Initiative and the Salvation Army. Jason is currently the Chairman of the Cheyenne Contractor’s Licensing Board, which he has served on since 2009.
