Design That’s Always Evolving
Gateway’s in-house design team is regularly taking feedback from our experts and using it to inform tweaks to our selection of plans. Some of these changes can include expanding the square footage of rooms, improving energy efficiency and updating material selections for better quality. We also consider feedback from our sales team and homeowners regarding current trends and preferences so we can continue to offer modern, stylish plans that make sense.
In recent years, we have found that what many of our buyers are looking for isn’t more but less. Smaller homes, which tend to be easier to navigate and maintain, are trending. At the same time, the cost of building has been on the rise, meaning a smaller home helps many buyers fit into their target price range. Census data shows that the median square footage for a single-family home in the U.S. fell to 2,191 in the second quarter of 2023, the lowest number recorded since late 2010.
In response to these trends, we are excited to debut two new cottage-style plans that feature a small footprint with big functionality. Learn more about them below!
The Caldwell
If you want to strike a balance between classic cottage style and modern ease, the Caldwell could be your dream home. This plan features a spacious great room with a fireplace which flows into the kitchen and dining area, all tucked beneath a vaulted ceiling and grounded by luxury vinyl plank floors. We focused on making this gathering area accessible, light and bright! Retreat to the roomy master suite with a large walk-in closet. Two additional bedrooms and a second bathroom complete the main level.
The optional finished basement offers the opportunity for two additional bedrooms, a full bathroom, a large family room and extra storage. We know you will love coming home to the Caldwell!
The Camden
This delightful cottage-style home first greets the eye with its charming covered porch. Inside, the Camden offers an expansive living space with a great room, a large kitchen with an island and breakfast bar, and a spacious dining area, with ample windows to promote views and natural light. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms also sit on the main level.
An optional basement finish adds two more bedrooms, a full bathroom and a generously sized family room with extra storage. If coziness and comfort are a priority in your next home, we’re confident you will find both in the Camden!
The Poplar
The Poplar plan (formerly known as the Hawthorn II) recently underwent revisions to increase the size of the home, particularly in the great room. Since most families want an open and inviting space to gather and enjoy each other’s company, our designers expanded the great room approximately 85 square feet. The entire footprint was widened to allow for larger rooms, resulting in an overall square footage of 1,939. This change permitted reconfiguration of the master bathroom and closet to create more closet space and better flow and more natural light in the bathroom. The kitchen was redesigned to create more counter space and the entryway reconfigured to be more inviting. Lastly, shelves were added in the garage to use up dead space — because who doesn’t need more garage storage?
